With its unrivalled screen and codec support, its direct recording capabilities and its ability to playback DVD video files without transcoding, Cowon’s A3 is a well-priced behemoth for portable video lovers, despite the advertised HD video support being so disappointing.

Design A mm 4-inch screen with an xpixel resolution takes up the majority of the A3’s glossy face. Still, we could look past at least some of these foibles if the rest of the player delivers the goods. Additionally, this bugger had plenty of heft, and quite frankly, felt like a small brick when compared to a 60GB 5G iPod. Beautiful screen for watching movies and excellent sound quality, but you pay for this in terms of the size and weight of the player; it is not something you will go jogging with.

The A3, while very similar to the Q5W, is a very different player and costs a very different price: And, if you’re bored of your own tunes, there’s an FM s3, and a built-in microphone for recording. Overall, we do feel that the A3 could stand to hit the gym, but for folks eying a PMP for video more so than audio, it’s pretty much right on par with the competition. The Bad Cowom joystick is unbearable; HD video is nowhere near as nice to use as Cowon claims; no kickstand.

Against Low battery life looks and feels cheap sound and vision performance is bettered elsewhere. The mind cowkn boggles at this oversight.
