I have only had a digital reader for 6 months and I am totally unimpressed with the quality of the books in this format.
I quite enjoyed the intertwining stories of this book. All the Weyrs of Pern. If the entire book had been about Piemur and the continuing excavations of Landing I would have enjoyed it much more.
I’d be tempted to go Chaotic Evil Robin Hood too!
The Renegades of Pern (Pern, #10) by Anne McCaffrey
Following this incident, Jancis reveals she discovered a record at Paradise River Hold detailing the “Admin Annex” at Landing, an unexcavated building that has been shielded with heat-resistant tiling to protect ” Aivas “. There are two very different stories haphazardly crammed into one. I took a long time with this one partly because I’ve had less time to read and partly because the majority of this book is hard to get through.
At Southern Holdfollowing a complaint from Mardra that someone went through a sack containing tithesa ship arrives – part of Toric’s secret trades with the Northern Continent – carrying Hamiana Mastersmith and Toric’s brother, and a number of holdless men to aid in expanding the holding – Hamian reveals a dragonless man, Gironwas supposed to join them, but he disappeared en route, running after sweepriders.
I have been thoroughly entertained this time around and it has been so enjoyable getting to know these characters again. As the Fall comes to an end, a dragonrider – an Oldtimer – lands and angrily berates them for being unprepared for Fall – the fact that they are out in Fall, and that Kimmage Hold hasn’t prepared a ground crew. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? It’s also difficult to get the pace of this story as it is very bitty and sporadic.
I also didn’t buy the Jayge Aramina love. There is so much happening and so many different stories within that you never grow bored. At Southern Hold, Toric decides to deal with the vast numbers of people trying to get to the Southern Continent by sending Piemur to meet with Masterharper Robinton to negotiate changing the restrictions on Southern Hold – leading to the meeting with the Benden Weyrleaders in ” The White Dragon “, and a number of inexperienced Lord Holder’s sons being sent to Southern Hold, much to Toric’s displeasure – although Piemur notes they will whip them into shape.

Interwoven through their story are glimpses of important historical events taking place in Pern society which were seen in other novels, but retold this time through new eyes. Jayge travels first to Igen Caverns for information, then to Keroon Hold, where he helps transport mares to the Beastmasterhold and then to Benden Hold – where he becomes attracted to a dark-haired girl, who he decides to attend the Benden Gather with after he returns from Benden Weyr – before traveling north to Benden Weyr, where he sees Thella with two men.

And as the times of trouble grew, so did the ravages of Thella and her band, turning from theft to murder to vicious and insane revenge. This story is unique in that its timeline runs parallel with several other novels in the Pern series. In time, the dragonriders reveal they are aware of the extent of Southern Hold, but have renegadds wish to contest Toric’s holding; they only wish to explore the various ruins in the Southern Continent in the hopes of finding out more about their ancestors.

What a great series. The book really dragged a anbe in the middle and then picked up again once we hit Landing.
The Renegades of Pern: #7
At the beginning section of the novel, I was rennegades how McCaffrey was going to tie in the many different character she introduces in the prologue where she quickly jumps through brief mini-stories, giving us glimpses of different characters. Then it jumps to present times then to when eenegades southern continent has some holds under Toric who wants to hold ALL of the southern area.
We usually see only the “upper crust” as it were in Pern novels focusing on dragons and their riders.
