I really liked this book. Now the boy with no “discipline” or “character” must somehow survive on his own. The writing is beautiful and appropriate for the subject matter. One of his sisters takes poison to avoid being raped at an inn that is being used as a way-station.



I had to read this for a Sociology of Genocide class but I sincerely loved every page. The book starts off with a serious bang that will already bring tears to your eyes, taking place in the Armenian Holocaust that most people don’t know about, I certainly didn’t.

In Germany, the genocide was industrial, almost impersonal, with people herded into camps and exterminated. The story is brutal; the first fifty or one hundred pages walk the reader through bodies like detritus. It follows the plight of Vahan Kenderian, a twelve year old boy who witnesses the deaths of his family members one after another.

I adma initially frustrated by this approach, but when I compared it to works like Fatelessness and NightI realized that the Holocaust books often choose not to offer an account of the Nazis’ rise. And it has become gradually an event that’s been “forgotten” in a certain way.
